This is Mexico’s second KO Stage win in a World Cup, and the first since 1986 vs Bulgaria (2-0) at the Azteca (same stadium, 40 years ago).

At 17 years and 259 days old, Gilberto Mora is the second-youngest player to start a World Cup knockout-round match, behind only Pelé in 1958 (17 years and 239 days).

Mexico is set to become the 3rd team in FIFA World Cup history to win its first 4 games by shutout in a single tournament after 1990 Italy (5) and 1986 Brazil (4)

Mexico has played 89 competitive matches in the Estadio Azteca, losing only twice: W69 D17 L2. — those two defeats were for World Cup Qualifiers in this century (1-2 v Costa Rica in 2001, 1-2 v Honduras in 2013).

Mexico is the first CONCACAF team to eliminate a CONMEBOL team in a FIFA World Cup knockout match (South Americans teams had won all five such previous encounters).

Julián Quiñones is the fifth Mexican player with 3+ World Cup goals, after Luis Hernández (4), Javier “Chicharito” Hernández (4), Cuauhtémoc Blanco (3) and Rafael Márquez (3)

Mexico tied the most goals (2) they have scored in the first half of a World Cup match. They had previously done this twice in 1962 vs Czechoslovakia and 1986 vs Belgium.

Ecuador conceded multiple goals in a match for the first time since a 2-1 loss to Venezuela in the Copa América in June 2024; ending a run of 26 straight matches holding opponents under two goals (11 total goals conceded).

Mexico has not conceded a goal in the first half of their last 15 World Cup matches, the second longest streak in the competition’s history (England – 19 straight from 1982 to 1998).
