An estimated 100 people have been killed by the outbreak of Meningitis in Zamfara State in the last two months.
Also, it was said that over 500 others are currently receiving treatment in various medical facilities across the state.
Commissioner of Health, Alhaji Suleiman Gummi, made the disclosure in Gusau the state capital, saying meningitis outbreak which was occasioned by the harsh weather condition started in one local government area has now spread to nine other local government areas, while the remaining four local government areas are put under watch.
The affected local government areas according the the Commissioner are Bungudu, Maru, Maradun, Talata-Mafara and Bakura, Shinkafi, Anka, Kaura -Namoda, Birnin-Magaji and Zurmi.
Gummi said the state government had since set up special camps and had deployed medicine and health personnel to contain the situation.
He also said that the state government had reported the matter to the federal government and more medical support were being expected.
In view of the deadly consequences of the meningitis outbreak, the Zamfara State Government yesterday constituted a Special Taskforce Committee on the outbreak of meningitis in the state.
The committee which will be chaired by the Secretary to the state government, Professor Abdullahi Shinlafi, has the Commissioner of Health, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu Gummi, Commissioner Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Alhaji Muhammad Muttaka Rini, and the Finance Commissioner, Alhaji Muktar Shehu Idris as members.
The committee will investigate the cause of the outbreak and advice government on how to assist victims of the disaster.
