Mena Ogidi: How to deal with trigger happy security personnel

Logo

Had the April 26th, 2026 extrajudicial  murder of an unarmed civilian, Mena Ogidi by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP,  Nuhu Usman happened on April 1,  many would have dismissed the news as  APRIL FOOL given that it is unbelievable that an officer of the law could pull out his gun and shoot his fellow human being,  a man who posed no threat to him. And to add salt to injury, the said officer showed no remorse but instead jubilated after carrying out the cold blooded murder. Many who saw the video wey which later went viral described the action of the ASP as the height of insanity. In other words, given the foregoing, ASP Nuhu can be described as demented. The story goes like this: ASP Nuhu Usman was detailed to track down a dispatch man in  Effurun, Delta state. The officer tracked the dispatch man with an illegal parcel to a motor park and after arresting him he handcuffed him and took him to a corner and shot him twice at a close range. ASP Nuhu’s  other colleagues hailed his action. However, a patriotic Nigerian who was nearby watching the gory sight took his time to video it and shared it on social media. Everyone that watched the  video screamed blue murder and many could not believe that this was happening in Nigeria.

You know a good leader by the way he reacts to incidents like the ASP Nuhu saga. The Inspector-General of police , Mr Tunde Disu is such a leader. He exhibited once again the stuff he is made of – a sterner stuff. Within 12 hours after the horrible murder of Ogidi by ASP Nuhu, IGP Disu got him and his murderous gang arrested and transferred to Abuja for orderly room trial, parade, dismissal and court trial thus diffusing tension. According to IGP Disu, “the NPF is an institution built on the rule of law, and we have zero tolerance for lawlessness within our ranks. No uniform is a license to kill,” reiterating the position of the Force, the IGP emphasised that actions of the officers were personal breaches of discipline and did not represent the institutional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to  the holy book Leviticus 24:17: “And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death.”There are many Nuhu Usmans in police uniform and in other security agencies. In the police, you find them more in the now disbanded special anti robbery squad, SARS. These are trigger happy police officers roaming about our streets and communities looking for those they will turn their guns on.I recommend that, besides dismissal from the force, trigger happy policemen face firing squad whenever they murder innocent citizens extrajudicially.

I also recommend that policemen be periodically subjected to psychological and psychiatrist checks. The IGP should take a bold step by ensuring that every member of the defunct  SARS from the rank of superintendent of police is subjected to psychological and mental test. If the Nuhu saga had happened during the military era the killer officer and his gang would have been secretly transferred to one of the northern states to cover their sinful tracks. Thank God for democracy!

I’m delighted to note that the issue of state police is on the front burner. With state police in place, such criminal atrocities as a police personnel murdering an innocent citizen would not go unpunished. Given IGP Disu’s firm words: “Let me be clear: this action was criminal, it was unprofessional, and it has no place in the Nigeria Police Force”, it is obvious that  ASP Nuhu and his gang of trigger happy policemen have met their Waterloo.Nigerians await the final episode in the sordid saga- Court death  sentence on the killer(s) of Ogidi Mena!

Ominous times ahead

The entire world is presently engulfed in  many unpleasant challenges. Among these experiences includes general insecurity sequel to national instability and war, massive acute shortage of essential items like agricultural products; massive job cuts and health instability.

In all of these, African countries,  especially Nigeria, is experiencing massive insecurity that is gradually spreading across the country. The current insecurity started from Borno State via Boko Haram. Terrorist from within and outside the country had once again attacked Chibok community in Borno state and over 16 people were killed and two others injured. Also in Benue state reports say four persons  were killed in Agatu local government area. An eye witness, Danny Uloko gave the name of those killed as Ochefije Elijah Ojema, Igojuju Husaini, Odiya Ochowehi, and Ochoyoda Adejo. According to reports they were attacked by armed terrorists. The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the attack.

Ejeh said that due to the presence of security operatives in the area, armed herders now find it difficult to invade some of the communities but have resorted to ambush tactics.

Recent, intense bandit attacks in Nigeria—primarily in the North-West and North-Central regions—have caused widespread killings, mass abductions, and mass displacement. As of early May 2026, severe attacks and kidnappings were reported in Kwara, Zamfara, and Katsina states, with bandits often attacking in large groups on motorcycles.

In Kwara State, multiple attacks were recorded between April/May 2026 in areas like Edu and Kaiama LGAs which resulted in some deaths and the kidnapping of residents including attacks on security personnel. In Zamfara State deadly raids by marauding armed Fulani bandits has been reported. Several people were abducted, forcing residents to flee.Meanwhile in Katsina State there has been increased bandit activities in areas like Sabuwa, with recent reports indicating house-to-house shootings and kidnapping.

In Sokoto State,  bandits recently abducted nine people in the Chacho community.

The Nigerian Army has launched offensives, including in Katsina State, where they targeted bandit leaders.Emergency measures authorities have introduced restricted movement for motorcycles and late-night gatherings to mitigate attacks.Despite these actions, the bandits frequently change tactics, such as attacking military bases or using complex, coordinated raids, causing untold trauma and displacements among villagers.

Meanwhile the resultants effects of these attacks and insecurity are acute job loss,  unemployment, humanitarian crisis,  economic instability, high operational costs for businesses, and insecurity.  Security observers predict that the days ahead will be evil. They predict that ominous times are ahead of the country and that if nothing urgent is done, there could escalation.  And with the 2027 elections almost around the corner if nothing concrete is done to end this octane insecurity we may wake up one morning to realise that anarchy has overtaken the land. God forbid!
