If you’ve seen the buzz around Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate or noticed how Mixta Africa is getting more attention across the continent – and even among Nigerians in the UK and Canada – there’s a good chance Onome Umukoro had something to do with it.

She’s not a celebrity. She doesn’t shout. But behind the scenes, Onome is one of the key people shaping how African businesses connect with people at home and abroad.

As Group Deputy Manager of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Mixta Africa, Onome helps promote housing, real estate, and hospitality across Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, and Côte d’Ivoire. Her job? Getting the word out in a way that gets results – boosting awareness, bringing in buyers, and building trust with audiences everywhere from Lagos to London.

One of her proudest moments? Increasing brand awareness by 5% in just one month at Lakowe Lakes – through smart campaigns, great storytelling, and the right events. She’s also helped create homeownership opportunities for Nigerians abroad, working with banks to make mortgages more accessible.

Before Mixta, Onome spent 10 years at Sterling Bank, where she wore many hats: from marketing to procurement, CSR, and even fashion. Yes – fashion. She led a creative team that brought in over 300 businesses from the fashion and leather industries in just three months. She helped launch digital products like Specta and Switch, bringing in over 500,000 users and pushing the bank’s digital presence to new heights.

And that’s not all. She saved Sterling Bank over ₦100 million in procurement, launched powerful CSR campaigns, and helped the bank grow its image among young, creative Nigerians.

She studied Philosophy at the University of Lagos (yes, really!), and has bagged certifications in marketing, agile methods, procurement, and branding from institutions like Google Nigeria, CIM UK, and Pan African University. She’s also a proud member of APCON and the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

What’s special about Onome isn’t just her resume – it’s the way she sees marketing as more than ads and billboards. For her, it’s about understanding people, building trust, and telling the right stories. And that’s exactly what Africa – and African businesses – need today.
