An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday granted a N200,000 bail to a generator mechanic, Emmanuel Micheal, who allegedly stole the N40, 000 battery of the generator given to him to repair.

Micheal, 28, who resides in Ikeja, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing brought against him.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, who gave the ruling, granted the accused one surety in like sum and directed that the surety must show proof of gainful employment.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Onhonwa, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 6 at 4.30 p.m. at No. 11, Ladipo Bateye St., G.R.A, Ikeja.

Imhonwa said the accused stole a Lister generator valued at N40,000, property of the complainant, Mr Okpako Daniel.

He alleged that the accused, who was repairing the generator, could not give a satisfactory account of how the battery disappeared.

“Micheal abandoned the generator and absconded until he was apprehended and handed over to the police for questioning.”

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The accused, on conviction, may be sentenced to three years imprisonment.

The case was adjourned until November 14 for hearing.  (NAN)
