The acting Vice Chancellor, New City University, Ayetoro, Ogun State, Prof. Joseph Olagunju has advised its pioneer students to abide with the university rules and regulations and warned of consequences they violate any.
Prof. Olagunju spoke at the maiden matriculation ceremony of the university in which 35 new students were admitted for the academic session, stating that New City University is founded on the bedrock of high academic and moral standards.
His words: As matriculated students, you are expected to uphold the university’s regulations and ethical codes with utmost seriousness. Any form of academic dishonesty, including examination malpractice, as well as involvement in cultism, violence, or other forms of misconduct, will be met with stringent disciplinary action.
“Such behaviours undermine not only your own future but the collective reputation of this institution. Instead, embrace honesty, respect for diversity, cooperation, and intellectual curiosity. These values are essential to your success and to your role as responsible citizens who will contribute positively to society.
“As you have recited the matriculation oath, you are solemnly committed to uphold the statutes, ideals, and traditions of New City University. That solemn vow marks the beginning of a transformative journeyone of learning, discovery, and personal growth.
May you embrace this journey with zeal, integrity, and determination. The knowledge and skills you acquire here will empower you to make meaningful contributions to national development and global advancement”
According to him, the ceremony is not only to formally admit the first cohort of students into the institution but also to celebrate the birth of a new chapter in the story of higher education in Nigeria.
In his speech, the Pro-Chancellor, Chairman, Governing Council, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye said the university idea was conceived through a divine inspiration and further shaped by the dedication of some stakeholders.
The council chairman disclosed that the journey began with a detailed feasibility study and planning phase and that the National Universities Commission (NUC) played a role in guiding its development to ensure it met the highest standards.

Akinfeleye said the promoter of the university on January 29, 2021 sent letter to NUC and got a response on January 5, 2022. He further explained that by April 2025, the commission gave the university a provisional licence to operate.
‘We got a provisional approval to start five faculties. These are Faculties of Basic Medical and Allied Health Science, Science and Computing, Communication and Media Studies, Law and Social and Management Science.
The pro-chancellor disclosed that the university intends to increase it carrying capacity to admit more students and would introduce new Faculty of Engineering and College of Medicine.
The founder and Chancellor of the university, Akin Akingbesote described the institution as a dream come true and the students matriculation as new a chapter in their academic journey.
Akingbesote said the Law programme has been approved and would starts admission in September 2026 while the College of Medicine and Engineering Faculty will begins operation in 2027.
Representative of the Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Mr. Hakeem AbdulHameed said all admission must go through CAPS and that the 35 students went through CAPS.
AbdulHameed who is JAMB Ogun State Coordinator said the university management has done well by complying with the Boards directive on admission, stating, the right to admit students is through CAPS. Any admission that did not pass through JAMB is invalid.
Many students are still coming to our office to print admission letters. Most of them are final year students in different institution. The era of doing admission without CAPS is gone.
