Nigeria’s advertising icon and industry pioneer, Dr. Abiodun Shobanjo, has been honoured with the title of ‘Father of Advertising in Africa’, for his contributions to Nigeria’s marketing communications sector and his impact across the continent.

The recognition came during an evening of goodwill on Tuesday organised Marketing Edge Publication to celebrate Shobanjo’s legacy ahead of his 80th birthday on December 24, 2024.

The event, which attracted industry leaders, policy makers, and stakeholders, highlighted his pivotal role in reshaping Nigeria’s advertising industry and positioning it as a key driver of national economic growth.

Publisher of Marketing Edge, John Ajayi, described the honoree as a visionary who laid the foundation for the modern marketing ecosystem in Nigeria. “Today, we stand on the threshold of history as we formally proclaim and honour Dr. Shobanjo, as the father of advertising in Africa because of his innovative and initiatives as well as his influence in the industry where he has single-handedly built generations of practitioners and enduring legacies,” Ajayi said.

He also highlighted Shobanjo’s inspiration to the growth of Marketing Edge over the last 21 years, crediting the advertising titan for motivating the establishment of Nigeria’s first locally-focused brand journalism platform. “When we set out 21 years ago to build a unique magazine brand in Nigeria’s media space, only the trail-blazing records of a daring man in Dr. Shobanjo’s mould could have emboldened us to tread that path.

“Shobanjo’s career, spanning over five decades, is marked by the establishment of iconic institutions within Nigeria’s marketing communications space, including his leadership in building Troyka Group, one of Africa’s largest marketing communications conglomerates. His efforts have not only elevated the local advertising industry to global standards but also created employment opportunities, fostered entrepreneurial talent, and driven brand innovation in Nigeria and beyond,” Ajayi said.

The evening chaired by elder statesman Vincent Maduka, brought together key figures in the marketing communications sector. In his address, Maduka urged marketing stakeholders “to preserve the culture and values in their work, emulating the commitment demonstrated by Shobanjo.”

In his remarks, Shobanjo expressed gratitude for the recognition. He appreciated everyone, including mentees and colleagues, who had been part of his journey and contributed to the growth of the industry. “This honour is not just about me, it is a testament to the collective efforts of those who believed in a vision and worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition,” Shobanjo said. He reiterated his commitment to mentoring future generations, emphasising that the industry’s success lies in nurturing young talents and fostering innovation to keep Nigeria’s advertising sector at the forefront of global trends.

Shobanjo’s influence has also contributed to Nigeria’s economic trajectory by nurturing homegrown brands that compete on a global scale, supporting local businesses, and building capacities that align with the government’s drive for economic diversification.

Through his mentorship, generations of professionals have emerged to lead advertising agencies, thus ensuring continuity and sustainability within the industry.
