For allegedly breaking into two shops and stealing goods worth N209,000, a 20-year-old man, Yusuf
Idris, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, whose address is unknown, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and burglary to which he pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Simeon Imhonwa told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 30 at Alakoro Street, Idumota on Lagos Island.
He alleged that the accused conspired with others now at large and broke into two shops belonging to Kehinde Agboola and Ucheakolam Onyesi.
Insp. Imhonwa said the accused and his accomplices used a sharp object to break the shops.
According to him, the accused stole cartons of Milo from one shop and 50 pieces of school bag from the other shop, all valued at N209,000.
“While they were raiding the second shop, security guards started running toward their direction.
“Other accomplices escaped with some goods, while Idris was apprehended and handed over to the police.”
The offences contravened Sections 287, 309 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sections 287 and 309 prescribe a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 307 stipulates seven years for burglary.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Further hearing in the case has been fixed for Sept. 12. (NAN)
