Governor Seyi Makinde and other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were among dignitaries who attended the 67th birthday of former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Monsurat Sunmonu, in Oyo town on Thursday.
The event, held in the Kosobo area of Oyo, also had in attendance PDP chieftains, traditional rulers, and residents.
A governorship aspirant of the party in the state, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, who was present at the event, described Sunmonu as a prominent figure within the party and the state.
“Senator Monsurat Sunmonu has played a motherly role, not just within our party but across Oyo State. That is why you see Muslims, Christians, party members, and leaders all gathered here in her hometown to celebrate her,” Ajadi said.
In her remarks, Sunmonu thanked guests for attending and restated her support for the Makinde administration.
“Wherever Governor Seyi Makinde is going is where we are all going in Oyo State,” she said.

She also acknowledged the role of the state government in the installation of traditional rulers.
Makinde, in his remarks, recalled Sunmonu’s role during the 2019 elections, noting that she supported his campaign after her own senatorial bid.
He also referenced her tenure as Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, where she became the first woman to hold the position in the state.
“Up till today, Oyo State has not produced another female Speaker. That tells you the kind of history she made,” he said.
Also present at the event was the PDP National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, alongside traditional rulers, including the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Olushola Alao.
Sunmonu represented Oyo East and Oyo West constituencies in the state assembly and later served as Speaker in 2011 before moving to the Senate.
