Barring any last minute changes, the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, will, Wednesday, appear before the Senate for his confirmation hearing.
Senate President Bukola Saraki, made the disclosure, when he briefly presided over the day’s legislative business, before he headed for the Presidential Villa for a meeting with President Mohammadu Buhari.
“Tomorrow (today), we will have the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, who will appear before us for screening at 11:30a.m,” Saraki revealed.
Magu was appointed in November 2015, by President Muhammadu Buhari, following the expiration of the tenure of Ibrahim Lamorde.
On December 15th, 2016, the Senate, after an Executive Session, announced the rejection of Magu. Spokesman of the Senate, Senator Sabi, who spoke to newsmen afterwards, based the action of the Red Chamber on an October 3rd, 2016 ‘damning’ report by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The first letter, which urged the Senate to confirm Magu as the substantive head of EFCC, was written in mid June by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo who acted as president, while Buhari was away in UK on a medical vacation.
On Tuesday, 24th of January, 2017, President Buhari resubmitted Mr Magu’s name as the substantive chairman of EFCC.
Buhari, had in the letter, noted that anti-corruption war was at the heart of his administration and insisted that Mr. Magu was fit enough to lead the way, despite the report of the DSS.
He said Magu in his response to the allegations raised in the DSS report, adequately addressed them. He said based on Magu’s response, he had to re-forward his name to the Senate for confirmation as the substantive chairman of the EFCC.
As at the time of filing in this report, it could not be ascertained if the Senate President was already in receipt of a new status report from the DSS on Magu.
