Renowned human rights lawyer, Mr. Fred Agbaje, died in a hospital in London, yesterday. The cause of his death was not immediately known.
His long time friend, Chief Edwin Igbokwe, who was contacted on the phone by Sunday Sun reporter confirmed the news and described the sudden demise Agbaje as a terrible shock. He noted that the deceased had fore long been a lawyer to his family.
Igbokwe said he had spoken with his friend on November 11 and was therefore deeply shocked and saddened.
His words: “I’m just hearing of it. I spoke with him on November 11th. For me to now hear, just few days after that he has died is a very big shock.
The day I spoke with him, it had to do with my wife’s anniversary. When I called him, he said he was on his way to attend a court case in Abeokuta, Ogun State. That was the last time we talked. Now only for somebody to call me to tell me that Fred was dead. I am just shocked by this terrible news. I never knew that he had a health problem.
Igbokwe described him as a good man and added: “He has been our family lawyer for a long time and we had a very good relationship.”
Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, who also commented on the death of Agbaje said that the country had lost “another voice that spoke for the people.”
