The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially launched the use of drones for traffic management, security surveillance, and public safety across Lagos State.
In a statement signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, he said the unveiling of the project marks a decisive transition from analog methods to advanced digital intelligence in managing the State’s road networks.
The project, in line with the THEMES+ Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, is aimed at leveraging innovation to promote sustainable urban mobility, enhance safety, and improve operational efficiency.
Speaking on the development, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the deployment of drones as a groundbreaking step that would elevate traffic enforcement in the state.
“This transition transcends the mere acquisition of equipment; it embodies a strategic reformation that positions LASTMA at the forefront of digital governance in traffic management. These drones will provide real-time aerial oversight, enabling swifter interventions, improved safety outcomes, augment emergency response coordination, bolster security frameworks and the cultivation of a more disciplined motoring culture,” he said.
Bakare-Oki added, that the operations would be conducted under strict privacy and ethical safeguards:This milestone stands as yet another resounding testament to the THEMES+ Agenda of Governor Sanwo-Olu, wherein technology and innovation serve as indispensable drivers of a safer, smarter, and more habitable Lagos,” he noted.
The LASTMA boss also reassured the public that the drones would complement the agency’s emergency response measures and other existing services, including its toll-free hotline: 080000527862. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to reducing travel time, curbing road accidents, and preserving lives and property through technological innovation.
