LASG seeks support to build drainage channel in railway compound

Residents of NIgerian Railway Compound in Ebute-Metta area of Lagos and adjoining communities will soon heave a sigh of relief following a truce reached between Management of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and Lagos State government to pave way for the latter to construct drainage channel to deflood the location.

The project involves construction of reinforced drainage channel running running through Murtal Muhammed Way to railway compound corridor and the Confluence point at Iponri and Western Avenue.

Although actual amount earmarked for the project and source of finance, was not made known, the agreement to construct the channel, was reached at a meeting between NRC and tenants including: representatives of St. Saviour Schools, NTA Channel 10, Mainland Local Government, Ojez Entertainment, Legacy Museum 1995, NRC staff quarters amongst other industrial and manufacturing concerns.

Commenting on the initiative, managing director, NRC Dr Kayode Opeifa assured Lagos state government of the corporation’s full support to ensure successful execution of the project worth billions of Naira.

Director, Drainage Services in the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Engr.Adedapo Ajadi said that the project will permanently resolve the problem of flooding which has been a major menace to residents of railway compound.

He appealed for support of management of the corporation so as to enable the ministry complete the project within the stipulated period of 18 months.

Also speaking representative of St.Savious School, Agatha Usman commented on the annual flood, saying “Everyone in the School are always apprehensive once the rainy season begins as everywhere in the School premises was always flooded”.

She praised Lagos state government for coming up with a permanent solution to the flood menace in the area.

President, Legacy 1995 -museum, Taiwo Olaniyi and director federal medical centre, Dr. Sam Oguine joined to give kudos to Lagos state government for remembering people resident in Mainland area of the State.
