The Nigerian film industry witnessed a vibrant display of cultural artistry on Sunday, March 1, 2026, as acclaimed filmmaker and author, Laju Iren hosted the world premiere of her latest feature, Onobiren, at EbonyLife Cinemas, Victoria Island.

Under the theme, South-South Royalty, the event served as a high-profile tribute to Niger Delta heritage.

The premiere drew a cross-section of leaders from the political, religious, and entertainment sectors. Notable attendees included: Orode Uduaghan, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Delta State, Chude Jideonwo, Media Entrepreneur, Pastor Emmanuel Iren, Lead Pastor of Celebration Church International and Industry Stars: Juliana Olayode, Blessing Nze, Michael Ejoor, Ojoma Ochai, and Amanda Dara.

The film, which features a powerhouse cast including Bisola Aiyeola, Deyemi Okanlawon, Patience Ozokwor, and Norbert Young, seeks to challenge traditional archetypes in Nollywood.

The Executive Producer Laju Iren, drawing from her Itsekiri roots, emphasized the importance of representation in modern storytelling.

“As an Itsekiri woman, I recognize that our stories are often underrepresented. We filmed in my grandmother’s village, Koko, to bring an authentic South-South perspective to the screen. Onobiren is designed to spark conversations regarding gender roles, faith, and the sheer power of female resilience.”

Lead actress Ruby Akubueze, who portrays the protagonist Roli, echoed these sentiments, noting that the film serves as a catalyst for “more women telling women’s stories.”

Akubueze described her character as a symbol of determination for those seeking “greener pastures” despite systemic obstacles.

Actor Desmond Bryce highlighted the film’s unique visual language, noting that the script’s focus on the natural elements of the Niger Delta, specifically its waterscapes, offered a fresh aesthetic rarely seen in mainstream cinema.

Onobiren started airing in Nigerian and Ghanaian cinemas on March 6, 2026.
