The Lagos State Taskforce has intensified monitoring and enforcement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, in line with its mandate to curb environmental infractions and public nuisances across the state.
The operation, carried out yesterday, was aimed at ensuring compliance with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law of 2017.
Chairman of the Agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, led the exercise, supervising activities across identified hotspots known for environmental violations.
Areas covered included Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja, Abule-Egba, Agege Abattoir, Iyana-Oworo, Lagos Island, Lekki–Ajah Expressway, Ijora Causeway, Ijora Underbridge, and Iddo, among others.
While there was notable compliance, particularly in the restriction of vehicular movement and commercial activities, Akerele observed that some residents failed to actively participate in the sanitation exercise.
At Ile-Epo, he commended transport union members for taking responsibility in cleaning their motor parks and surroundings, urging them to sustain the effort.

In a related development, Taskforce operatives arrested over 50 suspected miscreants and street urchins along the Lekki-Epe Expressway for allegedly disturbing public peace and attempting to exploit the restriction period to perpetrate criminal activities.
Some of the suspects were also accused of acts posing threats to public infrastructure, including billboards and road signage. They are expected to be charged to court. The monthly sanitation exercise is part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation, and street trading, among other environmental violations.
The Agency stressed that active citizen participation, alongside consistent enforcement, remains key to achieving a cleaner and healthier environment.
Akerele reiterated that violators would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He also addressed youths in Ile-Epo, Oke-Odo LCDA, urging them to participate in sanitation exercises and desist from playing street football during restricted hours.
The state government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on environmental nuisances as part of efforts to make Lagos cleaner, safer, and more livable.
