Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, has warned transport union members and other residents against taking the law into their own hands following the gruesome killing of the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye.

The police boss, during a meeting with leaders of the various transport unions in the state, assured them that those responsible for the killing of the late union official would be apprehended.

He also disclosed that the command had deployed adequate personnel across different parts of the state to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

CP Tijani informed the meeting that the command had commenced a thorough investigation into the incident, a fact, he said, that all parties could attest to.

He assured those present that the outcome of the investigation would be made public upon its conclusion. He also appealed to the leadership of both the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to caution and restrain their members from engaging in any form of violence.

CP Tijani emphasised that the command would not tolerate any act capable of disrupting public peace and warned that he was closely monitoring movements and activities across the state.

He urged all parties to allow the police to carry out their investigation without interference and encouraged them to provide credible information that could assist the investigative process.

The police commissioner reassured everyone that the investigation would be conducted diligently, professionally and without bias.

He further charged union leaders to caution their members and foot soldiers against any act of violence, reiterating that anyone found breaching the peace would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Tijani stressed the need to allow the police to conclude their investigation and reminded everyone of the serious consequences of any breakdown of law and order.

Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, commended the Lagos State Police Command for maintaining peace since news of Ajiboye’s death broke.

He assured the commissioner of police that calm had been maintained since the shooting incident on Sunday and disclosed that the union had held several meetings to reinforce the message of peace among its members.

He further assured the police that the union would continue to maintain peace and would hand over any member found attempting to cause trouble or disobeying the union’s directive to remain calm.

The Chairman of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Lagos State also expressed appreciation to the Lagos police boss for convening the meeting.

He pledged the union’s full cooperation with the police to ensure that those responsible for the killing are identified and brought to justice.

The union leader further assured the meeting that peace would continue to prevail, stating that members of the association would not engage in any act capable of causing unrest.

A suggestion was also made that a public announcement should be issued, advising members of the public to refrain from any act capable of triggering violence or causing a breakdown of law and order.
