The fight against HIV/AIDS in Lagos was bolstered lately with a workshop, which got religious leaders involved in the campaign since they are closest to their flock.

It was “a three day train-the-trainer workshop for Christian and Muslim religious leaders and clerics in the southern states,” of the country.

The event which held at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, saw emphasis laid on HIV/AIDS knowledge, emerging trends and human rights.”

The event was organised by Ummah Support Initiative in collaboration with The US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR), with support from PEPFAR, HJFMRI, and WRAIR agencies.

Chairman, Christian Health Association of Nigeria (CHAN), Lagos State chapter, Dr Abayomi Ogunbekun, said on the first day, as a part of the seminar, participants paid a courtesy visit to some Christian and Muslim leaders in the states.

Those visited were the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Stephen Adegbite and Grand Imam, Lagos State, Sheik Sulaimon Abu-Nollah.

He said both leaders expressed happiness and satisfaction at the renewed push to curtail the spread of the HIV/AIDS scourge: “It was a great outing during which we renewed efforts at fighting the HIV/AIDS challenge in Lagos.

“With the awareness created, a lot more people will continue to realise that the ailment is still very much around. When they hear the message from their faith leaders they are sure to take it a lot more seriously.”
