The Samuel Ladoke Akintola Memorial Foundation, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, has announced plans to commemorate the 60th remembrance anniversary of the late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, former Premier of the defunct Western Nigeria and the 13th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland.
Chief Akintola (1910–1966) was a distinguished Nigerian lawyer, journalist, orator, and politician. He served as the second and last Premier of Nigeria’s Western Region and remains widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern Nigeria. He was assassinated on 15 January 1966 during Nigeria’s first military coup.
In a statement jointly signed by the Foundation’s Coordinator, Mr Yemi Adedokun, and its Public Relations Officer, Mr Remi Oladoye, the Foundation disclosed that the remembrance ceremony will hold on Thursday, 29 January 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan, Ibadan.
The anniversary, according to the Foundation, is aimed at reflecting on the political ideals, leadership philosophy, and enduring contributions of the late statesman to both regional and national development.
Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, is expected to deliver a keynote address at the event, alongside Prof. Akinjide Osuntokun, former Nigerian Ambassador to Germany. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors of the South-West states, and other invited governors from across the country will attend as special guests of honour.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Senator Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, will serve as Chairman of the Day, while Chief (Amb.) Abayomi Akintola, Dr Abimbola Akintola, and Justice Ladiran Akintola are listed as chief hosts.
The Foundation noted that the programme will provide a platform to honour the legacy of Chief Akintola and re-examine his role in the political evolution of the old Western Region and Nigeria at large.
