Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN), last week, held its first K-POP concert in Abuja, providing opportunity for different dance groups to showcase their talents for chance to be chosen for global competition.
KCCN explained that K-POP is the Korean version of American Pop that’s unique to the Korean community/culture. It’s very popular amongst Koreans, and more of a group oriented performances which involves dance and other art performances.
Manager, KCCN, Kim Chang-Ki, alongside his family members and some other officials of the Korean community in Nigeria were conspicuously present at the event.
He appreciated the enormous talents Nigerian youths have displayed over the years in different parts of the world including Korea, noting that over the years, K-Pop teams from Nigeria have emerged winners at the world K-Pop festival.
He noted that the best three competitors would be rewarded with cash prizes as high as N700,000, adding that the many events by the Korean Cultural Centre helps to further promote bilateral relations between Nigeria and Korea.
He said: “This is first Korea K-POP concert in Abuja. We usually have this event in Lagos but we are having this event this time around in Abuja because many people likes K-Pop.
“Even though Lagos remains the hub of entertainment in the country, the choice of Abuja was informed by the high number of diplomats and Nigerian government officials residing in the city, which is the nation’s capital.”
Cultural Events and Communications Officer KCCN, Jennifer Ezeonyeasi, in her remarks, explained that the concert was organized in collaboration with Jump AREEWA, noting that the essence of the concert was to gather all the previous winners of K-POP competition or people that have made it to the final stage of the K-POP competition from years back for reunion.
“So this concert brought together people that have won the concert over the years to create bonding and networking amongst K-POP community. We are trying to build an active K-POP community in Abuja and in extension Nigeria.”
