The Kebbi Progressive Youths (KEPYO) has called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recent abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State, following concerns raised by Governor Nasir Idris about security lapses prior to the incident.

In a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi, KEPYO spokesperson, Usman Musa, said the governor’s account of events before the attack highlights issues that deserve careful review by relevant authorities.

Governor Idris had earlier disclosed that the state received intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS) indicating that the school might be at risk, prompting the convening of an emergency Security Council meeting. According to the governor, security personnel were subsequently deployed to the location.

He further noted that he had received reports suggesting that the deployed personnel left the school shortly before the attack took place. The governor described this development as concerning and said a committee has been set up, led by the state’s DSS director, to investigate the situation.

KEPYO, in its statement, said the concerns raised by the governor underscore the need for a transparent and independent inquiry to establish the facts and ensure accountability where necessary. The group emphasized that understanding what transpired is essential for preventing similar incidents in the future.

The organisation welcomed the state government’s ongoing efforts toward securing the release of the abducted students and expressed hope that the girls would be rescued safely. It urged security agencies at both federal and state levels to continue to work collaboratively in addressing the incident.

KEPYO also appealed to civil society organisations and the international community to continue monitoring developments and to support initiatives aimed at strengthening the protection of schools and students across vulnerable communities.

According to the group, residents of Kebbi State and Nigerians at large “deserve clarity and reassurance,” while the families affected by the abduction “deserve justice and the safe return of their children.”
