The Kebbi State House of Assembly has said that the suspension of two of its members over alleged attack on Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu was done in the interest of peace in the state.
Chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon. Salihu Dangoje, representing Sakaba Constituency, while speaking with journalists in his office, on Tuesday, said the suspension of the two members were not to witch-hunt them as being speculated. He also explained that the affected members had already accepted the House’s decision in good faith.
It could be recalled that Governor Bagudu was booed during his condolence visit to a family in Suru Local Government Area by some suspected political thugs.
The affected members suspended included Hons. Anawura Garba Suru and Sani Umar Zuru. While Suru was suspended for alleged attack on Governor Bagudu, Zuru was asked to stay away from the Assembly for three months over alleged unguided utterances on the floor of the House.
Dangoje, while reacting to their suspension, noted that Hon. Suru had accepted the decision of the House which was supported by 22 members while a member absconded during the voting.
According to Dangoje, “We are doing this because of peace in the state. Nobody is witch-hunting anybody. In fact in the House, a visitor cannot differentiate between APC lawmakers and PDP members. We are working as a team. Anything the governor brought before us were always approved by all of us because we all have the interest of the state at heart”.
The three panel committee set up to investigate the alleged attack on Governor Bagudu comprises Hon. Hamza N.D. Bello as Chairman, while Hon. Ahmed Bawa Kuka, a member and Hon. Nasiru Muhammad Danumma, as Secretary had briefed the House that on February 6.
Governor Bagudu was booed by suspected thugs at Zuru Local Government Area during his condolence visit to a family in the area while Hon. Suru and Education Secretary of Suru Local Government Area were also present at the scene.
In the Committee report which was made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi stated that ,” it was gathered during oral interviews that the Education Officer of Zuru Local Government was present along side with other prominent politicians when His Excellency arrived the house of the deceased.
“That the Hon. Member representing Suru Local Government Area was also present when the Governor arrived the venue. That neither the Education Secretary nor the Hon. member deemed it fit and proper to rise and greet or welcome His Excellency.
“That a day prior to the awkward event, there was a meeting between the accused persons and some prominent politicians including the Hon. member representing Suru constituency.
“That since the 6th day of February,2017 when the unfortunate incidence happened, neither the Education Secretary or the Hon member did appease to His Excellency. That when the accused persons were re- called back to the Police C.I.D, it was Hon. Garbs Anaruwa Suru in company of some other personalities that were the sureties of the accused persons”.
