The Kaduna State University (KASU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike, allowing academic activities to resume immediately, according to Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa. Efforts to reach ASUU Chairman Dr Peter Adamu for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, May 15, 2025, Prof. Musa announced that Governor Uba Sani has approved a ₦50 million monthly standing order for staff welfare and released ₦146 million to clear some withheld salaries and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) allowances. Additionally, the governor authorised KASU to retain a percentage of its internally generated revenue (IGR) to enhance financial autonomy, with the exact amount to be determined.
“These measures are not only bold but unprecedented in the recent history of the university,” Musa said, commending Sani’s sensitivity to students, education, and staff welfare. He noted that a high-level negotiation team, chaired by Deputy Governor Dr Hadiza Balarabe, has been constituted to address outstanding issues with all university unions.
Musa praised Sani’s leadership, stating that the governor, as the University Visitor, has tackled long-standing challenges inherited from past administrations. “The swift financial interventions, structural reforms, and invitation to dialogue reflect an administration that deeply values education,” he said.
The VC urged parents, students, staff, and the public to support these efforts to restore KASU as a “centre of learning, progress, and hope”. The strike, which began in April 2025 over unpaid salaries and welfare issues, disrupted academic activities for weeks, as reported in local media.
