Kano: Two confirmed dead, 20 injured in trailer crash

From Desmond Mgboh, Kano

At least two people were confirmed dead, and 20 others were injured when a trailer loaded with goods, animals, and passengers lost control in Kano and collided with another vehicle.

A statement by CRC Abdullahi Labaran, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano, said the fatal road traffic crash occurred on Saturday, April 18, at about 9:20 am along Maiduguri Road at the Wudil T-junction.

The statement explained that the crash involved two vehicles, one of which was a DAF trailer loaded with animals, goods, and passengers, which had departed from Wudil Market en route to Lagos State.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver lost control due to overspeeding while approaching the T-junction, resulting in a collision,” it said.

“A total of thirty (30) male adults were involved in the crash. Out of this number, twenty (20) sustained varying degrees of injuries, eight (8) were rescued unhurt, while two (2) persons lost their lives,” the statement explained.

The spokesperson remarked that upon receipt of the distress call at approximately 09:25, an FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within 10 minutes and promptly carried out rescue operations.

“The injured victims were evacuated to Wudil General Hospital for medical attention, while the obstruction caused by the crash has been successfully cleared to restore free flow of traffic.”

Meanwhile, the Sector Commander of the FRSC Kano Sector Command, Idris Mohammed Lawal, has expressed concern over the continued disregard for road safety regulations, particularly the dangerous practice of conveying passengers in trailers meant for goods and animals.

He reiterated that overspeeding and overloading remain major causes of road traffic crashes and called on drivers and transport operators to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations.

He further urged members of the public to avoid boarding such vehicles and to prioritise their safety at all times.
