Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has thrown his support behind protests spearheaded by women against gang violence and phone snatching in Kano State.

Hundreds of women and girls stormed the streets of Kofar Mata in Kano on Saturday, protesting the unending wave of violence by gangs known as Yandaba that has claimed the lives of their loved ones.

One of the protesters lamented that their husbands and sons were dying for no reason as every day there is a “fight, a killing, a stabbing”.

Gang violence in Kano has gained notoriety in recent months, with Kofar Mata experiencing an episode between July 31 and August 1.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command said it has recorded success in the fight against Daba and phone snatching.

According to the command, the government has set up a joint committee headed by a Commissioner, Yusuf Kofar Mata, to fight gang activities.

In an X post on Saturday evening, Senator Sani praised the women protesters for their bravery.

According to him, phone snatching has become so rampant in the country that brandishing one’s phone in public has become “a suicide mission”.

He said, “Phone snatching in cities across the country has become a deadly menace.

“Many victims have paid dearly with their lives in the hands of those knife wielding criminals.

“Women have become the most vulnerable.

“The protest in Kano by women against phone snatching is a reflection of the danger and the tragedy.

“Be conscious of the fact that walking and showing off phones is now a suicide mission.”
