Suspected bandits and terrorists have killed at least five people in separate attacks in Kaduna State, including the deputy commander of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KADVS) in Zuntu, Kubau Local Government Area, and two other vigilantes.
Two residents were also reportedly killed while two others were abducted in a separate attack on Agunu community, Agunu Ward, Kachia Local Government Area, in the early hours of Monday.
The Zuntu attack occurred on Sunday night when suspected bandits reportedly attacked KADVS personnel operating in the Kubau axis.
A credible KADVS source, who spoke on the recent incidents, explained that personnel had been intensifying surveillance and operations around major checkpoints used to intercept suspected criminals.
According to the source, the vigilance personnel recently intercepted a suspected criminal transporting Indian hemp and ammunition at a major checkpoint, underscoring the importance of such strategic positions.
The source said security personnel at the checkpoint had suspected a vehicle approaching their position but came under fire after the occupants allegedly opened the vehicle doors and started shooting.
He explained that the personnel responded by opening fire at the attackers, adding that the incident was an indication of the dangers faced by vigilantes while confronting armed criminals.
The source further disclosed that KADVS would not back down on its operations in the area as part of efforts to strengthen security and prevent further attacks.
He said the state government was aware of the ongoing operations and was taking measures to strengthen the capacity and welfare of the vigilance service.
According to him, KADVS personnel were also expected to begin receiving the new minimum wage of N72,000 before the end of the month, describing improved welfare as part of efforts to motivate the personnel.
The source also disclosed that the service had completed its armoury, which he said was necessary for the safe storage of weapons and ammunition being deployed for operations.
He explained that the new armoury was designed to provide stronger security for the weapons and ammunition, particularly as KADVS expands its operational capacity across vulnerable areas.
The source said the development was important because large quantities of ammunition could not safely be stored in village-level facilities without adequate protection.
Kubau has witnessed previous security operations involving KADVS and other security agencies.
In June 2026, KADVS personnel reportedly intercepted and arrested suspected bandits along the Ikara-Zuntu route in Kubau Local Government Area.
In another operation, the vigilance service was also reported to have arrested eight suspected armed bandits during a midnight surveillance operation in the area.
In Agunu, sources said the attackers stormed the community in the early hours of Monday, shooting dead two people and abducting two others.
“We woke to the shocking killing of two of our people and the abduction of two others.
“These are armless Nigerians. We appeal to the Federal and State Governments as well as security agents to come to the rescue of our people in Kachia and Kajuru Local Government Areas,” the source said.
