Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has assured the Federal University of Technology, Owerri,(FUTO ) of intensified security around the university and its host communities following the abduction of two students and the death of another victim.
CP Bosso received the FUTO Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ikechukwu Dozie, and members of the university management on a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters on Monday , September 7, 2026.
The meeting focused on rising security concerns in FUTO and surrounding areas, particularly along the Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede axes. The police and university officials discussed recent incidents including the kidnapping of two students on September 6, 2026, and a related fatality, as well as reports of cult-related activities in the area.
Addressing the delegation, CP Bosso said the Command had already stepped up patrols and operations in the affected areas. He added that a similar engagement was held with stakeholders from Nekede on September 3, 2026, as part of efforts to build cooperation with host communities for timely information sharing.
On the abducted students, the Commissioner said the Command was working to secure their rescue and apprehend those responsible. He expressed sympathy to the families, friends and the university community over the death of the other victim, and prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul.
To drive the response, CP Bosso directed the Area Commander Owerri, the DPO Ihiagwa, the Commander of the VCRU and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to intensify efforts toward the rescue and arrest of the perpetrators. He said operational details would not be disclosed to avoid compromising ongoing investigations.
Prof. Dozie thanked the Commissioner for the prompt response and for receiving the management team. He called for sustained police presence and closer collaboration between the police and the university to protect students, staff and residents.
The CP reiterated that security is a collective responsibility and urged students, staff and residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to the police. He assured that the Command would continue to work with FUTO management and host communities under the Nigeria Police Force Safe School Initiative to maintain peace within and around the university.
Present at the meeting from FUTO were Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Prof. Engr. Remy Uche, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. C. C. Ogueke, Registrar Mr. Chidozie Uba, University Librarian Dr. Mrs. J. N. Ekere, and Chief Security Officer DSP Patrick Egwu (Rtd.), alongside other principal officers. Senior officers of the Imo State Police Command were also in attendance.
