Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has stated that the N50,000 monthly Empowerment and Poverty Relief Programme is strategically designed to enable beneficiaries to contribute meaningfully to the local economy.

A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, yesterday, said Governor Yusuf made the remark while presiding over the disbursement of start-up capital to beneficiaries at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

He explained that the poverty alleviation initiative is a direct fulfillment of the campaign promises made by his administration to the people of Kano State.

He noted that his administration has designated 2026 as a year of intensive empowerment for men, women and youth as part of deliberate efforts to tackle poverty and improve livelihoods.

The programme, he said, has been consistently implemented since his assumption of office, with thousands of women already benefitting and recording significant improvements in their standard of living.

Highlighting the impact of the initiative, Governor Yusuf disclosed that he received reports of a beneficiary who judiciously invested her initial N50,000 grant into a business venture, growing her capital to over N1.2 million within two years.

He urged the new beneficiaries to utilise the funds prudently to support their families and contribute positively to their communities.

He also commended the House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore as well as the chairmen of the 44 local government councils, for their legislative support and timely release of funds for the programme.

Speaker Falgore stated that the scale of infrastructural development and poverty alleviation programmes being executed by the Yusuf administration is evident across the state.

He added that even critics of the administration have acknowledged Governor Yusuf’s visible and positive transformation of the state.

Speaking on behalf of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Vice Chairperson and Chairman of Dambatta Local Government Council, Alhaji Jamilu Abubakar Dambatta, who represented the Chairperson, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yushau Soja, commended the governor for his inclusive leadership.

He particularly praised his initiatives aimed at empowering citizens to become more productive, self-reliant and economically stable.
