Nigeria’s youth basketball development drive will receive another major boost this weekend as the Jordan Nwora Basketball Camp tips off on Friday at the Ilupeju Basketball Court in Lagos, with 120 young players expected to participate in the three-day programme.
The camp, which runs through Sunday, will feature 60 boys and 60 girls drawn from different parts of the country, providing them with an opportunity to improve their skills, gain mentorship and showcase their talents before experienced coaches and basketball stakeholders.
Organisers confirmed that preparations have been completed for the event, which was initially scheduled to begin on June 14 before being brought forward due to logistical considerations.
Speaking ahead of the camp, Alex Nwora expressed confidence in the readiness of the organisers to deliver a successful programme focused on player development and education.
“We have done all the necessary preparations. The objective is to give these young players a platform to learn, compete and develop in a conducive environment,” Nwora said.
He explained that participants would undergo a structured training programme designed to enhance their technical skills, basketball intelligence and overall understanding of the game.
Retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu also highlighted the importance of the initiative, describing it as a significant contribution to grassroots basketball development in Nigeria.
According to Ahmedu, the camp goes beyond teaching basketball fundamentals by equipping young athletes with the mindset and discipline required to excel both on and off the court.
“This camp is ready to add value to the game. It is about creating opportunities, exposing young talents to quality coaching and helping them understand what it takes to succeed in basketball at higher levels,” he stated.
The Jordan Nwora Basketball Camp has evolved into a respected regional development platform since its inception. After launching successfully in Liberia, the initiative expanded to Ghana before arriving in Nigeria, underlining its commitment to nurturing basketball talent across West Africa.
Beyond technical training, participants will benefit from mentorship sessions, leadership development programmes and exposure to opportunities that could lead to scholarships and professional basketball careers.
With experienced coaches, former players and basketball administrators expected to be in attendance, the camp is anticipated to provide a valuable learning experience for participants while contributing to the long-term growth of basketball in Nigeria.
As activities get underway in Lagos, attention will be on the next generation of basketball talents seeking to take important steps in their development journey and further strengthen Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading producers of basketball players.
