President Bola Tinubu has praised former president, Goodluck Jonathan, for his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s democratic values and his life of service beyond office.
At the 10th anniversary of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja yesterday, he underscored respect for democracy and the legacy of leadership. “No matter whether our preferred candidates win or lose, we must learn to respect the wishes of those who vote differently because democracy offers us repeated opportunities to renew our mandates.”
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu emphasised that the strength of Nigeria’s democracy lies in honouring the choices of all voters, irrespective of political affiliations.
Describing Jonathan as a guardian of our collective values,” Tinubu said, “There can never be enough words to express the depth of our national gratitude to him.” He highlighted Jonathan’s decision to found the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation as a clear indication that “life begins anew when we leave the high offices for which we are elected.”
He drew a sharp contrast between leaders who pursue selfish interests after leaving office and those who dedicate themselves to serving humanity: “Some choose a vehicle that serves only themselves, one that pursues causes capable of harming the very society that once carried them. The other group chooses a nobler path: devoting their life to the service of humanity.”

Warning of threats to democracy worldwide, Tinubu noted, “Democracy across West Africa and globally has come under severe threat over the past decade, weakened by adventurists, extremists, and those intoxicated by power, who see institutions as inconveniences and elections as formalities.” In this context, Jonathan’s demonstration that “nobody’s ambition supersedes the sovereignty of the state” remains a pivotal lesson.
He also underscored national unity and collective cooperation: “No government can succeed without the cooperation of its people, and no people can advance without a government that listens and leads with clarity. Our democracy stands because of people like former President Goodluck Jonathan. People who believe that the Nigerian state is bigger than any individual.”
Congratulating Jonathan and his team, Tinubu expressed hope that the foundation would continue to serve as a beacon for peace and prosperity in Nigeria and Africa at large.
Former President Jonathan, in his remarks, reflected on the foundation’s origins from his own experience in office and reaffirmed its focus on diplomacy, good governance, and democratic institution development. He also called on political leaders to address security challenges responsibly for the wellbeing of Nigerians.
The event was attended by numerous dignitaries including former presidents, first ladies, and key leaders from across Nigeria and beyond, reinforcing the importance of democratic values and service to the nation.
