An International Conference on Igbo Studies being staged by the Centre for Igbo Studies, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), begins tomorrow at the varisity’s main campus.
The two-day event with the theme: “Re-imaging Igbo Studies in the 21st Century,” will be chaired by Chairman, Board of Presidents of the Council of Igbo States in Americas (CISA), Dr. Nwachukwu Anakwenze, while Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Charles Igwe declares it open at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium.
Daily Sun gathered that maiden hybrid event is a partnership between the apex Igbo sociocultural organisation; the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Council of Igbo States in Americas (CISA), and igbo World assembly (IWA).
Eminent scholars and other personalities from Igbo homeland and Diaspora are slated to attend the event including President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, and the UNN Alumni led by their global President, Dr. Doris Okeke.
A statement by the Director of the centre and convener of the conference, Prof. Uchenna Agbedo said the event provides a platform for scholars, researchers, experts, and enthusiasts to explore and discuss the current state and future directions of Igbo Studies in Nigeria and beyond.
“The Centre for Igbo Studies, UNN is committed to promoting and preserving the rich heritage of the Igbo people. The centre strives to create a vibrant platform for intellectual discourse, cultural exchange, and community engagement,” Agbedo stated.
He listed the pre-conference activities to include charity walk for Igbo, New Yam and Mmanwu (masquerade) festivals, cultural carnival featuring wrestling competitions, a fashion parade, oratorical performances, arts and crafts exhibitions to provide participants with a rich experience of Igbo culture and traditions.
The event will also feature fundraising for the establishment of a multi-billion Naira Igbo Cultural Village.
He said: “This project, initiates by the Centre for Igbo Studies, and for which the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Igwe has graciously approved a land scape for its permanent site in Nsukka Campus, aims to create a dedicated space for promotion, preservation and celebration of Igbo language, culture and heritage. The establishment of the Igbo Cultural Village Complex will provide a platform for cultural exchange, immersive acculturation and enculturation programmes, research, education and community engagement.”
Daily Sun was informed that it will further feature prizes and awards for excellence in recognition of the outstanding contributions and work by notable Igbo people, associates, friends, and well-wishers (of the Igbo) towards the development, preservation and promotion of the Igbo cultural heritage.
