Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, yesterday, directed senior officers of the command to intensify intelligence-gathering, strengthen community policing and deepen collaboration with other security agencies to enhance security across the state.

Tijani gave the directive during a strategic security meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), commanders of tactical formations and other senior officers at the Police Officers’ Mess, Ikeja.

The commissioner said the meeting was convened to review the security situation in Lagos and evaluate strategies aimed at addressing emerging security challenges and sustaining peace across the state.

He noted that the country was facing various security concerns and stressed the need for officers to remain proactive and professional in the discharge of their duties.

According to him, effective policing cannot succeed without the support and cooperation of the public.

He urged officers to strengthen engagement with residents, community leaders and other stakeholders, noting that intelligence gathered from local communities remains one of the most effective tools for preventing crime.

Tijani directed DPOs across the state to improve intelligence-gathering mechanisms within their jurisdictions and ensure the timely sharing of information capable of preventing criminal activities.

The police commissioner also stressed the importance of visibility policing and community-based security initiatives, saying residents must be encouraged to actively participate in safeguarding their communities.

He urged officers to continue building public trust through professionalism, prompt response to complaints and respectful conduct.

Tijani warned residents against violating existing regulations, particularly those relating to the use of covered vehicle number plates.

According to him, only persons specifically authorised by law are permitted to use covered number plates, adding that anyone found contravening the regulation would be arrested and prosecuted.

He said the command would not tolerate any attempt to circumvent security measures designed to aid crime detection and ensure public safety.

Tijani added that enforcement teams had been directed to ensure compliance with the law and deal decisively with offenders.

The police chief further stressed the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies operating within and around Lagos State.

He said the command had maintained a close working relationship with neighbouring state commands and other security agencies to secure border communities and prevent the infiltration of criminal elements into the state.

According to him, joint operations and intelligence sharing among security agencies remain critical to maintaining security, particularly along strategic entry and exit points.

The commissioner assured residents that the command would continue to strengthen existing partnerships to effectively address security threats.

Tijani also expressed concern over the increasing circulation of false and misleading information on social media platforms.

He warned content creators, bloggers and social media users against posting or sharing unverified security-related content capable of causing panic among residents.

According to him, recent incidents involving the circulation of misleading videos and reports had created unnecessary fear and confusion among members of the public.

He said such actions could undermine public confidence in security agencies and disrupt public order.

The commissioner urged content creators to exercise responsibility and verify information before publication.

He warned that anyone found deliberately spreading false information capable of threatening public peace or security would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Tijani stressed that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and should not be used to disseminate content capable of inciting fear or creating tension in society.

He reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Police Command to maintaining law and order and protecting lives and property across the state.

The commissioner assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to address emerging threats and ensure public safety.

He added that officers and men of the command had been placed on alert to respond swiftly to any security challenge.

Tijani called on residents to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to security agencies, noting that effective policing requires collective efforts between law enforcement agencies and the public.

He expressed appreciation to members of the public who had continued to support the police with credible information and encouraged them to sustain the cooperation.

According to him, the command will continue to review its operational strategies regularly to ensure that Lagos remains safe and secure for residents, businesses and visitors.
