Nigerian rapper and actor Falz has recounted a harrowing encounter with armed bandits on the Abuja–Lokoja Expressway, describing it as one of the most terrifying experiences of his life.

Speaking during a podcast, the entertainer said he and members of his team were travelling along the highway when they suddenly came under gunfire from heavily armed men.

According to Falz, everyone in the vehicle had been asleep before a loud bang jolted them awake.

“I was awake and it was going. Obviously, we were asleep, so we didn’t know what happened. We just heard a loud bang. Everyone woke up and looked ahead,” he recalled.

He said they were confronted by about five men wearing turbans and carrying AK-47 rifles in the middle of the expressway.

“We saw these turban-tying, AK-47-wielding, dangerous-looking men in the middle of the expressway. The first bang we heard was actually a gunshot. They had shot at our car,” he said.

Falz disclosed that the attackers fired repeatedly at the vehicle, with one bullet passing through the middle of the car, narrowly missing the occupants.

“The second bullet came flying through the middle of the vehicle. Everything happened within four or five seconds,” he said.

He explained that after the vehicle eventually stopped, the gunmen surrounded them and demanded money.

“The first thing the man asked me was, ‘Where is the money?’ I kept begging him, telling him there was no money,” he recounted.

According to the rapper, the bandits searched through their bags with daggers, scattering clothes and other belongings while looking for cash.

“They started bringing out the bags, cutting them open and searching everywhere for money,” he said.

Falz said the ordeal unfolded in a remote stretch of the Abuja–Lokoja Expressway surrounded by forest, leaving them with nowhere to run.

He added that although they later heard the sound of approaching sirens, the attackers responded by firing more gunshots before fleeing the scene.

“When I heard the siren, I thought help had arrived. Instead, they increased the gunfire before eventually leaving us there,” he said.

The rapper said he later stepped onto the highway to seek help from passing motorists, but none stopped to assist.

“I was trying to stop cars and tell them we’d just been robbed. Not a single person stopped,” he said, adding that he understood why motorists were too afraid to risk their own safety.

Falz’s account adds to growing concerns over insecurity along the Abuja–Lokoja Expressway, a major highway that has witnessed repeated attacks by armed criminals in recent years.
