Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has warned that any local government chairperson who fails to deliver their council to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections will be removed from office.
Nwifuru issued the warning on Tuesday in Abakaliki, the state capital, while inaugurating the newly elected chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the state’s 13 local government areas.
The governor said the council chairpersons would be held responsible for the APC’s performance in their respective areas, insisting that those who failed to secure victory would be replaced.
“Any chairman who fails to win his council will be removed from office and replaced with a councillor. I want this information to be on the headlines of newspapers because, as politicians, we would not speak in secret,” Nwifuru said.
He added: “The chairmen know we would win in the state, and if they choose to sleep and allow others to take their areas, they would be removed.”
Nwifuru urged the new chairpersons to prevent opposition parties from gaining ground in their councils, stressing that they must first consolidate the APC’s position at the grassroots.
He also directed the chairpersons to work closely with their deputies and avoid disagreements that could undermine the administration of their councils.

He urged the vice-chairpersons to support their principals rather than engage in rivalry.
“You should always be available to the chairmen and ask them about your council’s daily activities.
“Do not listen to gossip and ill advice from your friends against your chairmen because that will destroy your relationship with them,” he said.
Speaking on his own deputy, Nwifuru said her performance as a former council chairperson helped demonstrate her capacity for higher office, adding that she had continued to perform effectively as deputy governor.
Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairpersons, Afikpo Local Government chairman, Timothy Nwachi, thanked the governor and APC stakeholders for the opportunity to serve, pledging that the council leaders would work to secure a “landslide” victory for the party in 2027.
Among the new chairpersons are Osborne Umahi, son of Minister of Works, David Umahi, and Chidi Nwode, brother of the governor’s wife.
