Insecurity: Delta police, others to comb forests, monitor access routes

Delta Police

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has directed patrol and guard officers in all police divisions across the state, as well as leaders of vigilante groups, forest guards and other recognised civil security outfits, to intensify intelligence gathering and sustain patrols across forests, rural communities and critical access routes.

The police said the intensified operations would cover roads, waterways, railway corridors and bush paths as part of proactive measures to strengthen security and deny criminals safe havens.

The directive was issued during a strategic security meeting attended by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other members of the Command Management Team. CP Oyeniyi stressed that the directive must be implemented diligently and carried through to its logical conclusion.

In a statement, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner commended the various security outfits for their contributions to maintaining peace and security across the state.

According to the statement, the CP, however, emphasised that all operations by the security outfits must be carried out strictly within the confines of the law and in close coordination with the Nigeria Police Force.

“He directed that their activities at the local level be streamlined under the supervision of the respective Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), noting that effective community policing depends on collaboration, sustained patrols and timely intelligence sharing,” the statement said.

The police commissioner also warned against unlawful detention, torture, dehumanising treatment and the use of security outfits to settle personal grievances, insisting that all suspects arrested by vigilante groups or other recognised security outfits must be handed over immediately to the nearest police station for proper investigation and prosecution where necessary.

He further charged leaders of the various security outfits to instil discipline among their members, identify and remove criminal or errant elements within their ranks, and refrain from shielding anyone found to have acted outside the law.

CP Oyeniyi reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with genuine security partners operating within the legal framework, adding that the engagement would be sustained and replicated across all Local Government Areas of the state to enhance coordination, intelligence sharing and grassroots security.
