The inaugural Pastor Emily Aig-Imoukhuede Memorial Lecture will be held on Monday, June 8, at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, as part of activities commemorating the fifth memorial anniversary of the late Pastor Emily Okhenren Aig-Imoukhuede.
The lecture, themed, “Leadership and Service to God, Country and Humanity,” will be delivered by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto and one of Africa’s most respected voices on faith, leadership, justice and nation-building, Most Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah,.
Widely regarded as a moral compass for contemporary Nigeria, Bishop Kukah has distinguished himself through decades of principled advocacy, intellectual engagement and unwavering commitment to human dignity, good governance and interfaith harmony. His reflections on leadership and service are expected to provide profound insights for citizens, public servants, business leaders and the wider society.
The event will be chaired by Mr. Fola Adeola, distinguished entrepreneur, banker, investor and statesman, whose contributions to business development, public policy and leadership across Africa have earned him widespread respect and admiration.
The lecture has been established to honour and preserve the values that defined the life and legacy of Pastor Emily Aig-Imoukhuede, comprising faith, integrity, selfless service, compassion, excellence and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of society. It is envisioned as an enduring platform for reflection on leadership, citizenship, nation-building and service to humanity.
Pastor Emily Aig-Imoukhuede, who passed on to glory on June 8, 2021, lived an exemplary life devoted to God, family, community and country. Renowned for her warmth, generosity and strength of character, she touched countless lives through her service, philanthropy, mentorship and leadership.
A distinguished alumna of the University of Ibadan, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History (Second Class Upper Division), Pastor Emily built an accomplished career spanning education, the arts, public administration, private enterprise and public service.
Her professional journey took her from the classroom to the National Museum, where she served as Curator, before she went on to establish one of Nigeria’s pioneering private art galleries. She also served as National President of the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS), providing leadership to one of Nigeria’s foremost women’s organisations.
Her distinguished record of public service culminated in her appointment as Secretary of State for States and Local Government in 1993. Over the course of her career, she also served on the boards of several important public institutions and state-owned enterprises, including the Nigerian Mining Corporation, the Nigerian Cargo Handling Company and the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC).
The memorial lecture serves not only as a tribute to an extraordinary life but also as a call to action for Nigerians to embrace the values of ethical leadership, service, responsibility and national renewal that she embodied throughout her life.
