At least 47 political parties including the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) and Kowa Party have headed for the tribunal to challenge the declaration of Emeka Ihedioha as the winner of the 2019 governorship election in Imo State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Addressing newsmen on Wednesday, spokesperson of the parties and Deputy National Chairman of PPN, Chinedu Ukadike, explained that the parties decided on taking the step to avert the wrong precedence in the state by INEC declaring a winner of the governorship election without following the constitution.

According to Ukadike, the declaration of Ihedioha as the winner of that election without scoring the constitutional 2\3 from 18 council areas of the state was an aberration and a mockery of the electoral constitution.

While calling on INEC to withhold Ihedioha’s certificate of return pending when the matter would be resolved,  he disclosed that the 47 political parties have already started their legal battle to address what they described as a “serious breach of the constitution.”

“It is an aberration to declare Ihedioha winner.  It is unbecoming and shameful, declaring him a winner with three local government council; any candidate that must win must have 2/3 and a wide margin,” Ukadike said.

Other parties joining the fray are Mass Movement of Nigeria, (MMN), Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), Save Nigeria Congress (SNC) Nigerian People’s Congress (NPC and Democratic Alternative.

Others are National Democratic Party (NDP), Legacy Party of Nigeria (LPN) and Independent Democrats (ID).
