Iheanacho scores late winner in Celtic victory, faces criticism over form

Kelechi Iheanacho delivered a decisive moment for Celtic FC, but his overall performance remains under scrutiny after manager Martin O’Neill questioned his consistency despite the match-winning goal.

The Nigerian striker ended a 182-day goal drought with an 82nd-minute strike that secured a 2-1 win over Dundee FC, keeping Celtic firmly in the title race.

However, O’Neill’s post-match remarks shifted focus from the result to the player’s broader form.

“He has had some issues with injuries. At 29, he should be at the peak of his career rather than sometimes scratching around,” the Celtic boss said.

Despite the criticism, O’Neill acknowledged Iheanacho’s strengths, particularly his ability to hold up play and lead the line effectively.

“He scores, he can hold the ball up and is really good at that… at the end of the day, he can hold the ball up and that’s his trademark,” he added.

Reflecting on his pedigree, the manager pointed to Iheanacho’s past at Manchester City, expressing hope that the goal could boost his confidence.

“He’s played for Manchester City… But that goal will do him the world of good.”

Celtic had taken an early lead through Yang Hyun-Jun before Simon Murray equalised for Dundee from the penalty spot. Iheanacho’s late finish ultimately separated both sides in a tightly contested encounter.

The victory moves Celtic within three points of leaders Heart of Midlothian FC, while Rangers FC remain in the hunt, intensifying the title race.

While the late winner may signal a return to form, O’Neill’s remarks underline that expectations for Iheanacho remain significantly higher at this stage of his career.
