World football’s governing body FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have ordered the suspension of the Nigeria Football Federation’s ongoing electoral process, pending a joint assessment of the crisis engulfing Nigerian football’s governing body.
In a letter addressed to the NFF’s Deputy General Secretary, FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov confirmed that the two bodies are reviewing the legal, governance, administrative and electoral fallout following a wave of resignations at the NFF, including the federation’s president, members of its executive committee, and its general secretary.
The letter follows a meeting held on September 1 at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich, where officials from FIFA, CAF, the NFF administration and Nigeria’s federal government discussed the unfolding situation.

According to the letter, FIFA and CAF have not yet reached any conclusions on the matter and stressed that the suspension of the electoral process is meant only to preserve the status quo while their review continues — not to pass judgment on the validity of any actions taken by stakeholders so far.
The Deputy General Secretary has been named the primary point of contact between the NFF and the two football bodies until further notice, and has been asked to relay the suspension order to all relevant parties, including the NFF’s electoral bodies.
FIFA and CAF also announced plans for a joint fact-finding mission to Abuja “at the earliest possible opportunity.” The delegation is expected to meet with representatives of the NFF administration, NFF member associations, the federation’s electoral bodies, and the Nigerian government, including the National Sports Commission.
Officials said the mission’s findings will determine whether any recommendations are eventually forwarded to FIFA and CAF’s decision-making bodies, but cautioned that the outcome of the broader assessment remains open, with no timeline yet given for a resolution.
