The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has called on officers to join the Nigeria Police Cooperative Multi-Purpose Society Limited (POLCOOP) to enhance their welfare and promote savings.
He made the call yesterday during the POLCOOP’s 27th annual general meeting (AGM) at GRA, Ikeja, Lagos.
Egbetokun, who is the president of POLCOOP, urged officers to increase their savings, using the platform.
“The message is clear, we have compulsory and voluntary contributions. I urge you to increase your voluntary contributions, which will give you an edge that will give you a better future.
“When you require assistance, it will give you a lift. The cooperative will also look into compulsory savings, so that at the end you will go home with something tangible.
“The board will sit to work out modality, to work out something good for officers, “ he said.
According to the police boss, the cooperative is doing very well.
“The facts speak for themselves. Across the states of the federation, our projects are visible for all to see. Everywhere, we have ongoing initiatives, and I want to assure you that all the police financial institutions are performing very well.
“Aside from the police cooperative, we have the police pension and police insurance. They are all solid.
“Members of the Nigeria Police Force Microfinance Bank and pension scheme attest to its consistency and generous dividends.
“Many officers are lucky to own property in Abuja, “ he said.
Egbetokun said the event marked another milestone and showed the cooperative’s dedication to service, accountability and members’ welfare.
“The occasion celebrates another milestone and reflects the cooperative’s commitment to service, accountability and support for members’ welfare and empowerment.
“The event marks not just a milestone celebration but also reflects the society’s steadfast commitment to unity, transparency and service, as it continues to empower members financially, support their welfare and promote economic stability for improved productivity and well-being.
“I commend the management committee for its visionary leadership and the members for their loyalty and trust, which have made the society a model of excellence and a true pillar of support within the Nigeria Police Force.

“As you deliberate on critical issues at this AGM, we have resolutions to further strengthen the society, expand its frontiers and deepen the culture of transparency, unity and progress,” he said.
Egbetokun was represented at the event by Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, Abuja, Mr. Victor Olaiya.
Also speaking, the chairman of the board of directors, POLCOOP, Deputy Inspector-General, Mr. Bode Adeleke (rtd), said members’ savings were safe, withdrawals were quick, and support services like housing loans remained available.
“Members ‘savings are secured,
withdrawals are prompt and we continue to provide essential services like housing loans and other necessary support.
“We have a clear record of our activities, and we urge members to keep trusting us, as their money is safe, and whenever they are in need within the provisions of the law, they can rely on our support.
“Good days are ahead, things are getting better,” Adeleke said.
The secretary of POLCOOP, AIG Oyediran Oyeyemi (rtd), restated the IGP’s commitment to improving members’ welfare by promoting savings, loans, affordable goods, vehicle financing and housing support.
The secretary said that the society had upgraded from manual to digital.
“Before now, things were being done manually. We are now in the digital era.
We have to go computerised. It is easier to transact business without tears.
“Now that we have upgraded, we are teaching officers how to do it right, because most of them are still analog.
“No need to call anyone, stay in your comfort zone, fill your form appropriately, submit and get money instantly.
“I really want to thank the IGP especially for the opportunity given to us in the cooperative. I want to tell you that, if not for his support, I know we would not be able to handle the issue of the cooperative today. We have not seen a single person coming up to say that he or she has not received their money or that they have not been paid. The IGP made it possible.
“When we came on board, a lot of things were happening, until this present IGP came on board. Many of you were not paid for one year. People were often paid six months, and we got to explain to people how we would go to your bank to say we want to withdraw N3,000 and you say and you will not tear that bank apart; that was what was happening with us before. People would come to the cooperative and be demonstrating on the floor, looking for their money, some would cry, but we thank God it’s all in the past now.
“If you fill your form accurately, it can only take you two days, if not that particular day, to get your money whenever you want it from the cooperative. The problem we had was caused by our policeman, some were genuine, many were not genuine. Please, stop using third parties to request for your money in the cooperative . You don’t need to know anybody to access your money. That is how the system works now. I advise that you increase your savings so that you can get something tangible when you retire.”
