Igbo people in Lagos State on October 19, 2025, trooped out to celebrate the Igbo Heritage Day at the Police College Compound, Ikeja, Lagos.
Addressing the large crowd, which included prominent Igbo sons and daughters from all the local government areas and local council development areas, their friends and associates, Apostle Patrick Nwanze (Agu Anioma), Chairman, Organising Committee of the event, thanked Ohaneze Ndigbo, Council of Ndieze Igbo, community leaders and Igbo stakeholders for contributing to the success of the event.
He said that the event was a success despite attempts by some people to scuttle it, adding that the Igbo nation is bigger than any individual or a group of individuals. He counseled those involved in the plot to have a change of mind and join hands with other Igbo leaders for the development of the community.
Also speaking at the event, Chief Everest Ozonweke, Coordinator, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Southwest, said that Igbo Heritage Day is an event that is marked in cities across the world by the Igbo to celebrate Igbo culture and custom.
According to him, “we are celebrating our culture, heritage, language and ingenuity and at the same time we are fashioning out ways to navigate ways to the current challenges that confront us as a people.”

He thanked Nwanze and his team for organising a successful event and appreciated the sponsors. Ozonweke disclosed that a lot is being done to encourage the speaking of Igbo language among young people. He disclosed that the current President-General of Ohanaeze recently inaugurated a think-tank made up of some vice chancellors to draw up a roadmap on how to make sure that the Igbo language does not go into extinction. He added that the task of the group includes making sure that the Igbo language and culture are sustained.
He called on all Igbo speaking people in Lagos State to sheathe their sword and join to contribute to the development of Ohanaeze in the state.
Also speaking, Ubochi C. Ubochi, the traditional prime minister of Ndigbo in Eti-Osa LCDA, said that Igbo Heritage Day was meant to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people.
He stated that there are several ongoing efforts to preserve the Igbo culture and language. He added that the efforts are being made by Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Igbo World Congress, Aka Ikenga, among others, to be a success. Ubochi posited that the language will not die because of the ongoing efforts to revive it, adding that much documentation has been on the language to make sure that the language does go into extinction.
He disclosed that many non-Igbo people are interested in using and teaching Igbo language. “The Chinese, Japanese, the Dutch and others are teaching Igbo language in schools and universities as a course. In Igboland, many actions are taking place to make young people understand and speak the language.”
