The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Sokoto District Society, encompassing Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states, has committed to constructing modern secretariats to provide young accountants with essential resources and information.

Alhaji Ismaeel Oluwaseun Suleiman, the newly sworn-in 5th Chairman of the Sokoto announced this initiative in Birnin Kebbi at the weekend.

He said: “We are pleased to announce the acquisition of prime land in both Birnin Kebbi and Sokoto states, strategically located for the construction of our secretariat and study centre. “We will collaborate with the ICAN national body and State Governments to ensure these buildings meet the highest standards,” Suleiman stated.

He added: “This initiative will offer easy access to information and resources for aspiring accountants, fostering their growth and development. We have also successfully registered the District’s Study Centre name, paving the way to commence lectures soon. This milestone will undoubtedly increase the number of Chartered Accountants in our region, demonstrating our commitment to excellence.”

Suleiman, who also pledged to focus on community relations, the publication of a district newsletter, welfare packages, the development of the district’s website, member training, conference participation, and a youth engagement program, emphasized that unity among members would make these goals attainable.

“Our goal is to create an inclusive and welcoming society where every member feels valued, engaged, and empowered to contribute. To achieve this, we have developed a range of programs and initiatives catering to our diverse needs and interests. I urge all members to come forward and share their thoughts and ideas on how we can progress together, fostering a sense of belonging and collective purpose.”

In his valedictory speech, the immediate past Chairman of the district, Alhaji Sanni Yusuf Olatunji, encouraged former executive members to continue supporting the new administration. He highlighted the procurement of land in Sokoto and Kebbi States despite financial challenges.

The Special Guest of the occasion, Chief of Staff to the Kebbi State Governor, Barrister Attairu Maccido, praised ICAN for their longstanding ethics and professionalism in the field of accounting in Nigeria and their significant contributions to the country’s economic development.

Maccido urged the association to conduct their professional examinations for accounting students in Kebbi State, to ensure early engagement. He added that the state government would work diligently to support the association in enrolling students for their professional examinations.
