Nollywood actress Jemima Osunde has confronted a motorist she accused of driving against traffic on a Lagos road, insisting that she would not give way to a driver allegedly violating traffic rules.

In a video circulating online, Osunde was seen blocking the vehicle and explaining that the motorist had allegedly left his lane to drive against traffic because of congestion.

She said the incident occurred around the Oriental Hotel area, where she claimed the vehicle was using a lane meant for motorists heading towards Victoria Island while attempting to move towards Lekki.

“This is the lane for people going towards VI. This is the lane for people going into Lekki. This person is on my lane with a police officer in his car, and he’s expecting me to leave my lane,” Osunde said.

The actress said she refused to move, arguing that allowing the motorist to continue would encourage disregard for traffic regulations.

“You are passing one way. You left your own side of the road because of traffic and you have a policeman in your car, but expect me to leave my lane,” she said.

Osunde said she blocked the vehicle and contacted the police over the incident, expressing hope that the driver would be held accountable.

“I blocked him and I said, ‘I’m not moving,’ and now I’ve called the police on you. Hopefully they arrest him because this is part of the problem in this country,” she said.

She criticised motorists who break traffic rules to avoid congestion, saying such behaviour contributes to the traffic and wider lawlessness in Lagos.

“It’s easy to say Nigeria is bad, Nigeria is this. We are contributing to it. You’re contributing to it,” Osunde said.

The actress also questioned the assumption that one road user’s destination should take priority over others who are obeying traffic rules.

“Why is your destination more important than my own? So me, I can sit in traffic, but you can’t?” she asked.

Osunde said she would continue to stand her ground when confronted with similar situations, regardless of the status of the person involved.

“I don’t care if you’re a policeman. I don’t care if you yourself are a policeman. I don’t care if you’re a big man in the backseat of your car with the police,” she said.

She, however, noted that she would make exceptions for genuine emergencies involving authorised emergency responders.

“Unless you’re an ambulance or a fire truck or an emergency service, I will not leave my lane for you when you are passing one way,” she said.

Osunde described the incident as an example of what she considers a wider problem of motorists acting without fear of consequences.

“The average Nigerian has lost the concept of consequences for actions,” she said.

She urged road users to obey traffic regulations and said motorists should not expect others to tolerate violations simply because they are in a hurry.

The video has since generated reactions online, with the incident sparking renewed discussions about traffic violations, road discipline and the enforcement of traffic laws in Lagos.
