The Changan Hunter Plus is steadily carving a niche for itself in Nigeria and other key markets, standing firm against stiff competition from long-established pickup brands by offering a compelling mix of performance, durability and value.

In Nigeria, the modern 4×4 pickup—powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine—is marketed by Mikano Motors, whose strong reputation and customer-focused approach have further boosted the vehicle’s appeal among buyers.

Across international markets, the Hunter Plus is making notable inroads. In Saudi Arabia, it is contributing to a shift in the light-duty transport segment, as small and medium-scale businesses increasingly opt for vehicles that combine efficiency, reliability and affordability.

Similarly, in South Africa, where competition is intense and filled with bold claims, the Hunter Plus distinguishes itself by focusing on balance rather than excess, delivering practical value to consumers.

Despite being relatively new in Nigeria, the pickup has managed to attract growing patronage, competing effectively with both established and emerging rivals by relying on its inherent strengths.

Design and Performance

One of its standout attributes is its kinetic design, which combines rugged aesthetics with functionality. The pickup features 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, full LED headlamps, fog lights, chrome-plated handles, and integrated bed lining, among others.

Under the hood, the Hunter Plus is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged GDI+Bluecore engine paired with an eight-speed transmission from Aisin, ensuring smooth and efficient performance. Its off-road capability is enhanced by BorgWarner 4WD technology, differential lock, double wishbone front suspension, and a multi-link rear suspension system.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Hunter Plus departs from the traditional utilitarian pickup cabin, offering a refined and tech-driven environment. It comes with leather seats, smartphone connectivity (Apple and Android), Bluetooth hands-free system, a 7.5-inch digital cluster, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen display.

Additional features include a six-speaker audio system, electrically adjustable seats, ventilated front seats, and flexible rear seating arrangements, all designed to enhance comfort and convenience.

Safety and Convenience

The pickup is equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including multiple airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and Hill Descent Control. Passive safety features such as ISOFIX child seat anchors, seatbelt reminders, and collision safety systems further strengthen its safety credentials.

Comfort is also prioritised, with features such as automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, adjustable steering, power windows, and tyre pressure monitoring system.

After-Sales Support

A major advantage in the Nigerian market is the robust after-sales support provided by Mikano Motors. The company operates a nationwide network of service centres across major cities including Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, and Port Harcourt.

Customers also benefit from a five-year or 130,000-kilometre warranty package, offering added peace of mind and reinforcing confidence in the product.

Awards and Brand Strength

Globally, the Hunter lineup has earned recognition, including the “Best Pick-up 2021” award at the PR Arabia Automotive Sector Awards. It also recorded a milestone as the best-selling pickup in Russia in October 2024.

The vehicle is produced by Changan Automobile, one of China’s leading auto manufacturers, known for its emphasis on safety, quality, and innovation. With a heritage dating back to 1862 and decades of automotive experience, the company continues to strengthen its global reputation through models like the Hunter Plus.

As competition intensifies in the pickup segment, the Hunter Plus appears well-positioned to maintain its upward trajectory by delivering a balanced package that meets the evolving needs of both commercial and private users.
