Commissioner of Police, Kano State, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, has told the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, that the command has surmounted security challenges he inherited upon assumption of office 100 days ago. He said: “The command arrested 1,000 suspected thugs. They laid down  their arms and are now working with the command.

“The repentant thugs are currently working with the police for the promotion of peace, economic growth and development in the state.

“The command has imbibed community policing by showing commitment to professionalism. We have improved our relationship with members of the public.

“My 100 days brought to minimal various criminal activities that gave citizens sleepless nights and traumatised them.

“My 100 days marked the first time the command will collaborate with the Magistrate Association of Nigeria (MAN). It was held at the Police Mess, Bampai, Kano. The focus of the training is “The role of the police in the prevention of offence under the Kano State administration of criminal Justice Law [ACJI 2019].

“The training covered understanding the innovative provision of the Kano State ACJI 2019 in relation to the investigation and process of establishing a case. Officers were drafted from the command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), area commands, State Intelligence Bureau and tactical units and police divisional offices.

“I  had fruitful interactions with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists. I do appreciate the media in keeping the good people of Kano State abreast of the activities of the police command as they unfold.

“The past 100 have been eventful impactful. The command will continue to employ effective policing strategies, robust for tackling all forms of insecurity, both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches. There will be constant raids on criminal hideouts and black spots.

“We did some collaborative policing. We invited some identified individuals behind the escalation of thuggery, social vices and other violent crimes.

“We arrested 852 suspects whose activities violated the law of the land. They were arrested due to the zero-tolerance nature on nefarious activities. The suspects included 117 armed robbers, 25 kidnappers, 34 drug dealers, eight motor vehicles, 27 tricyle thieves, 16 motorcycle, 58 thieves, 19  fraudsters and 636 suspected drug dealers (Yan Daba). Others were 82 mobile phone thieves, 15 cattle rustlers, 25 goat and sheep thieves. Over 659 pacels and 1,063 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and 243 bottles of suspected codeine syrup were recovered.

“I carefully studied the crime pattern of the state. We have come out with an action plan that revolves around public accountability, community partnership and intelligence-led investigations.”
