Commissioner of Police, Benue State, Ifeanyi Emenari, has charged officers to hunt down criminals for peace to reign in the state. He announced the arrest of 25 suspected kidnappers, armed from their various hideouts at the recent Inspector General of Police [IGP] conference in Abuja.

He said: “The command is ready to expose unrepentant criminals. The command has recorded remarkable strides within two months in its fight against crimes, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and properties. The command has continued to intensify efforts in combating crime through proactive policing, intelligence gathering and swift response to distress calls.

“It will be too hard for hoodlums to carry out their operations. I visited some blackspots and redeployed some tactical team operatives to Markudi-Lafia Expressway and Makurdi-Jos Expressway. The command has imbibed community policing.

“As a result of sustained operations, the command apprehended 20 suspected criminals for offences ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms in connection with series of criminal activities. I have warned officers against the use of torture in conducting investigations. We have charged some of the suspects to court, while others are under investigation.

“The achievement of the command is a testament to the hard work and sacrifices of officers and men of the command.  We apply professionalism, transparency and unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law which restored public confidence and improved security.

“Benue State has recorded significant milestones in combating violent crimes, dismantling criminal syndicates, fostering community policing and enhancing collaboration with sister security agencies and stakeholders.

“The state is calm and safe with the cooperation of the citizens and support of government, which has given us operational vehicles along with other sister security agencies, to smoke criminals out of the state. The command has updated the professional capacity of officers in line with global policing standards and addressing skill gaps caused by outdated or neglected procedures.

“We have stepped up night patrols, aimed at reinforcing the policies commitment to serving and protecting the community. I have charged operatives to stay alert and be proactive in preventing crime and ensuring public safety. Officers to conduct patrol with diligence, respect, courtesy and to respect the rights of the citizens.

“Also, we aim to assess the operational effectiveness of the units, identify challenges and implement effective solutions. The strategy is to strengthen community policing and enhance security measures within the state.

Officers have been directed to be professional, firm and courteous in the discharge of their duties and imbibe community policing. They are also advised on discipline and integrity as core values that every officer must uphold. Officers should shun corruption and illegal duty. Rather, they   should have good relationship with the public and respect fundamental human rights of the citizens.

“I have visited stakeholders and encouraged them to reinforce security collaboration with police, traditional institutions and all other stakeholders to ensure a safer state. We will continue to ensure the safety and security of all residents and visitors in  Benue State.”
