Gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen militia, have attacked a community in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State and killed 13 people.
Our correspondent gathered that the herdsmen, while carrying out the attack, burnt houses and looted properties.
A source from the community, who did not want to be named for fear of victimisation, told newsmen in Makurdi: “Yesterday, 9 July 2024, Fulani herdsmen attacked Olegomachi community of Agatu LGA and killed 13 people.”
The Caretaker Chairman of Agatu Council, Barr Phillip Ebenyakwu, confirmed the attack.

Speaking on the phone on Wednesday, Ebenyakwu said: “Yes, it’s confirmed. There was an attack. It happened yesterday evening. The number they gave me was 10 people killed.
“They were armed with sophisticated weapons; they were looting, robbing, and burning houses. And they killed people.
“About seven houses were burnt down; they carried so many properties. Animals, including goats and chickens, were also carted away.
“It has been reported to the police. The DSS is aware too. I’m trying to ensure that security men visit the place. Arrangements are being made for them to visit the place,” he said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene, said she was yet to receive the report from Agatu.
