Former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has declared his support for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s presidential bid ahead of the 2027 general election, while urging President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step away from active politics.
Oyinlola, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said Nigeria needed younger leaders to take over the country’s leadership, arguing that older politicians should make room for a new generation.
He made his position known during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, where he discussed the country’s political direction ahead of the next presidential election.
The former governor expressed support for Makinde, who is seeking to contest the 2027 presidential election under the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) platform.
Oyinlola also questioned the continued participation of Tinubu and Atiku in the presidential race, insisting that both politicians should step aside and allow younger Nigerians to take up leadership positions.

Explaining his position on age and political leadership, Oyinlola recalled that he had previously advocated restrictions on the age of governorship aspirants based on his experience while governing Osun State.
“When I was in Osun, I made a declaration based on my experience in office that anybody above 50 should not aspire to be governor of a state,” he said.
He maintained that his position was informed by the need to encourage younger people to participate in governance and provide opportunities for a generational change in Nigeria’s political leadership.
The former governor’s remarks come amid political realignments and growing discussions among political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections.
