Henry Nwosu’s body transferred to Owerri

The body of late football legend, Henry Onyemanze Nwosu, MON, who passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, has been transferred to his ancestral home in Owerri, Imo State according to his former teammate, Chief Segun Odegbami.

Nwosu, affectionately known as the “Youngest Millionaire” for his rise in Nigerian football, was a key figure in the Super Eagles’ historic triumph at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. His exceptional skill in midfield and leadership on the pitch earned him a revered place in Nigeria’s football history. The transfer of his body marks the first step in preparations for his final rites.

He is survived by his wife, four children, and three sisters. The bereaved family is set to meet with extended relatives and stakeholders in the coming days to plan a befitting burial for the national hero.

Tributes and condolences have poured in from across Nigeria and abroad, reflecting the widespread admiration for Nwosu’s contribution to the nation’s football legacy.
