Hardship: Stop blame game, ASAF tells FG

PRESIDENCY

•PDP insists Tinubu lacks capacity to govern

From  Ndubuisi Orji, Okwe Obi, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress State Assembly Forum (ASAF) has told the Federal Government to desist from buck passing and come up with a workable solution to address the hardship in the country.

The APC had attacked governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had called on the Federal Government to solve the myriad of problems bedeviling the country.

But, ASAF Director General,  Fubara Dagogo, after a meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, at the weekend, admonished the Federal Government and governors of the PDP to look inwards toward reaching an understanding to introduce measures that could restore hope to Nigerians

Dagogo warned that Nigeria might soon be classified as a complete death zone, occasioned by paucity of food and other goods, if the government failed to salvage the situation

He noted that government at the various levels owe citizens an obligation of welfare and security, adding that they cannot be looking the other way, blaming each while the citizens die over poor policies

He urged the state governors to make adequate use of their State Assemblies who he said are ready to endorse their people oriented policies that could return hope to their impoverished constituents

“We at ASAF believe that this is the time to act and act fast. The federal government and governors must introduce measures using their various assemblies to return hope to the people.

“They must desist from the current trend of attacks, blames and buck passing against each other because all levels of government are involved in the untold hardship that Nigerians are currently passing through

“So far, it seems like their is no solution to all these, but we at ASAF believe that it is not over yet as governments continue to experiment with the various options on their table.

“The various state assemblies would happily endorse the life saving programs that their governors would introduce because they are really the ones that are closer to their constituents and they also feel the pains of this hardship with them

“Nigerians are in dare need of solutions from government to take us out of the suffering situation, and  we believe that the government must think and brace up with the challenges before the hardship sinks the country.

“This is not the time for blame, rather it is time for inward thinking by the government both at the federal and state levels,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PDP has insisted that President Tinubu is overwhelmed by the challenges in the country and lacks the capacity to govern Nigeria.

The opposition party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) over attacks on opposition governors for speaking out over the failures of the government.

It stated that President Tinubu was directly in charge of security and the national economic policies including administration of petroleum resources as Minister of Petroleum Affairs, as well as other national revenues.

Consequently, it argued that the president cannot transfer his alleged failures “to other tiers of government which have no control over national security, fiscal and monetary policies.

“Our party restates its position that the APC and the Tinubu administration are responsible for the current biting economic hardship and surging wave of insecurity across the country as they are completely overwhelmed and lack the capacity and competence to lead a nation like Nigeria.

“By seeking to allocate President Tinubu’s statutory duties to state governors, the APC has unambiguously admitted that it foisted on Nigerians an incompetent president, who cannot guarantee security and whose administration has devastated our national economy resulting in extreme hunger, hopelessness and desperation as evident in the protests, agitation and rising spate of suicide across the country.

“Every Nigerian is lamenting the terrible situation which President Tinubu’s ill-informed and ill-implemented policies have brought upon the nation.

“Moreover, State Governors have no control over the pervading corruption and continuing monumental treasury-looting under President Tinubu who has failed to take concrete measures to curb the malaise.

“It is an assault on the sensibility of Nigerians that instead of charging the government it formed to live up to its billings, the APC is seeking a sordid and depraved approach to divert public attention from its failures.

“Our party counsels President Tinubu and the APC to face their self-inflicted woes and heed the patriotic call of the PDP governors who are providing quality leadership with life-enhancing projects and programmes in their various states in line with the people-oriented manifesto and policy thrust of the PDP.”

Furthermore, the PDP noted that it is evident across the country that only governors elected on its platform “are commissioning legacy and life-enriching projects and programmes with which they are repositioning their States and various constituencies into oases of development.

“Nigerians should therefore continue to hold the APC and President Tinubu solely responsible for the suffering which they face. The PDP will not hesitate to name APC leaders allegedly involved in the continuing treasury-plundering as the APC must not be allowed to ‘grab, snatch and run ‘ with our national patrimony at the expense of millions of our citizens.”
