Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has welcomed former Governor and Senator, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, into the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing his return as a major boost to the party’s strength in the state.

The former governor, alongside the North West chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bello Hayyoutu Gwarzo defected to the All Progressives Congress.

The ceremony was held at  Shekarau’s  Bompai residence, yesterday.

Shekarau admitted that they had weighed several options before settling for the APC.

“We weighed several options after realising that the PDP had failed as a political party, before settling for the All Progressives Congress,” he said.

He recalled the internal disputes and bitter wranglings, which for months undermined the PDP, insisting that no serious politician would want to remain in such a political party given the circumstances.

He stressed that his move to the APC had the overwhelming support of his Shura Council, his elders committee, his board members and all his supporters.

“We fervently prayed, we deliberated on our defection and we made serious contacts. We talked to everybody before we decided that the APC is the best political party for us and for Nigerians,” he stated.

He also pointed out that they took time to evaluate all the other political parties in the land, including the African Democratic Congress, but pointed out that most of them could not be trusted for several reasons.

“We cannot put our trust on the ADC, a party filled with people of personal interests, a party struggling to have their feet, a party facing huge legal problems and a party whose  leaders are busy struggling for positions.”

Gwarzo said that recent bye elections held without the PDP in Ekiti and Ondo states were clear evidence that the PDP had failed, noting that staying in such a party was a big risk they could not afford to take.

Governor Yusuf stated that a date would soon be fixed, in consultation with the national secretariat of the party, for the formal reception of the former Governor into the APC fold.

He noted that the party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state.

The Governor added that the APC remains battle-ready to win all elective positions in the forthcoming elections, citing unity and strategic alignments as key factors driving the party’s confidence.

He further assured party members and supporters that the leadership was committed to strengthening internal cohesion and expanding its grassroots base across the state.

He called on party faithful to remain steadfast and continue mobilising support as the party prepares for future political contests.
